HR PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS
3 certificates in 1 - is that possible?

The Interest Zone correspondent covers the HR certification orientation session at the American Chamber of Commerce that took place last week.

The American Chamber of Commerce hosted on Wednesday 23rd January 2002 an orientation session about international human resources certifications.

The session was lead by Mr. Samir Younis -HR Consultant and Mr. Mohamed Amin - Deputy Executive Director and Chief Examiner. The main certifications discussed were:

  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR)
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).

Both are endorsed by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) and funded by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

The event was attracted a sizable audience, among the attendees were HR managers from Xerox - Egypt, Internet Egypt and the Cairo American College (CAC).

Mr. Younis started out by introducing the evolution of the HR field due to technological advancements. He also highlighted the difference between HR and the old Administrative/Personnel field. "The main challenge of HR these days is to adapt to these technological changes in the interaction with people," he said. SHRM developed a program to help provide a foundation for HR Professionals to face this challenge. SHRM represents 155,000 members worldwide. Mr. Younis then gave a quick overview about the SHRM learning system course.

- 30 contact hours non-credit course on average (will be increased due to the discovered need for that in the Egyptian environment).

- Participants must attend at least 75% of classes and sit on average at least 70% of class tests.

- Class test exams are the same format as the final exam.

- The material of the course is updated yearly.

- The PHR focuses more on the operational and technical aspects of HR.

- The SPHR focuses more on the strategic and policy issues of HR.

- Both courses consist of the same six modules but with different allocation and focus of questions in the exam as follows:

 Mr. Younis finally stated the benefits of this course and why is it right for you:

Mr. Mohamed Amin followed by stating the financial aspect for the certificate:

- There are two exams per year. One on the 4th of May and the second on the 7th of December.

- Classes are held once a week over a 12-week period.

- Location of classes: AmCham premises.

- Time of classes: 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

- Fees: $1000 (material included).

- Instructors are Mr. Samir Younis - HR Consultant from the AmCham, Ms. Magda Abdel Fattah from the AUC and Ms. Nadia Haridi from HR First.

- The minimum required years of experience for the PHR are two years (recommended 2-4 years) and for the SPHR 2 years (recommended 6-8 years).

- Dates for the May exam will start February 3rd to April 28th, 2002.

 

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive three certificates:

  1. A certificate from the AmCham for attendance and participation.
  2. A certificate from the SHRM for the course itself.
  3. A certificate from the HRCI for passing the final exam.
